Turkey Meatball Sandwich

Meatballs aren’t just for spaghetti noodles. Try placing them in a French baguette to make a saucy meatball sandwich. This sandwich reminds me of a deconstructed lasagna. A creamy ricotta mixture lines that the bread as it oozes with melted mozzarella cheese. Good thing you may already have most of these ingredients in your refrigerator and cabinets. I wanted to make a recipe that was not too complicated. Feel free to add fresh herbs to your turkey meat mixture. Even try adding chopped green onions or white onions. I always find that sage is a great compliment to any ground meat. I choose turkey because it is a healthier and leaner option. However, by no means are you limited to it. Go ahead and use ground pork or ground beef. You can also do half turkey and half pork to get a little more fat for a juicy meatball. If you want to keep it simple like I have, follow the recipe as directed.


A good cooking hack that I suggest is to use an ice cream scoop to scoop your meat to get it uniform sized balls. They will cook evenly together. Also, grease your hands with oil while you are rolling the meatballs to make it less sticky. There is a big debate weather to bake your meatballs or to fry them in a skillet. My mom fries them and I bake them. That’s my preference. I think baking is easier. You use far less oil and have less lumpy sides. Also, you can make a lot more meatballs at one time by baking than tending to meatballs on the stove.  Some people like the seared crust you get from frying. Again, whatever method you are comfortable with is the best method. If you have not tried baking or frying, vice versa, try it and compare methods.

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 tablespoon all purpose seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ cup Italian breadcrumbs
  • 1 jar (24oz) of tomato sauce
  • 1 cup (8oz) ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ cup parmesan cheese
  • 1 baguette
  1. Preheat oven to 350F.
  2. In a large bowl beat egg and combine ground turkey, all purpose seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, and breadcrumbs (Don't be afraid to use your hands!).
  3. With an ice cream scoop, scoop turkey mixture and roll into a ball. Place an 1-2 inches apart on a greased baking pan.
  4. Bake meatballs for 25-30 depending on how big your meatballs are.
  5. Warm tomato sauce in a large pan on the stove. Add cooked meats to sauce and simmer for 5 minutes.
  6. Cut baguette into four sections and slice down the middle. (If it's long enough, you may need a second loaf.)
  7. Combine parmesan cheese, ricotta cheese, and oregano together. Spread ricotta mixture evenly inside each slice of bread. Finally, sprinkle with mozzarella cheese.
  8. Bake bread open faced for about 5-8 minutes until the cheese has melted.
  9. Add about 3-4 meatball per sandwich and enjoy! Don't forget to add some extra sauce to your sandwich. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese!
